A Milestone for Open Legal AI Research
We are pleased to share that the ALEA Institute has received its IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter, granting tax-exempt status retroactive to the organization’s founding in August 2024. This determination formally recognizes ALEA as a public charity dedicated to advancing legal, ethical, and accessible AI through open-source research, data, and tools.
For those following the 273 Ventures story, this is a significant milestone. When we donated KL3M, the Kelvin Legal DataPack, and supporting tools to ALEA in late 2024, we did so with the conviction that open-source legal AI infrastructure belongs in the hands of a mission-driven nonprofit. The 501(c)(3) determination validates that structure and opens the door to tax-deductible contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations that share ALEA’s mission.
What ALEA Has Accomplished
In the months since its founding, the ALEA Institute has been remarkably productive. A brief summary of key outputs:
- KL3M Models: Continued development and release of the KL3M model family, including specialized models for legal text understanding, embedding, and generation
- KL3M Data Project: Published research on large-scale legal data curation methodology, including a comprehensive paper detailing the construction and composition of the training corpus
- Tokenizer Research: Novel work on tokenization strategies optimized for legal and regulatory text, addressing the unique vocabulary and structure of legal language
- NUPunkt and CharBoundary: Open-source libraries for sentence boundary detection and character-level text segmentation, designed for the specific challenges of legal document processing
- usbills.ai: A public resource for tracking and analyzing U.S. legislative bills using AI-powered analysis
- FOLIO and SOLI Ontology Work: Contributions to legal ontology development, supporting standardized representations of legal concepts and organizational structures
- Moratorium Nation: Policy research on the proliferation of AI moratorium legislation across U.S. states and municipalities
This output reflects the depth of the team’s commitment and the efficiency of a focused nonprofit model. Every one of these projects is open-source and freely available.
Our Commitment
273 Ventures and the ALEA Institute are distinct organizations with complementary missions. 273 Ventures is a commercial consultancy and product company. ALEA is a nonprofit research organization. We share founding team members and a common belief that the legal industry benefits from open, transparent AI infrastructure.
We will continue to support ALEA through contributions of code, data, and expertise. We encourage others in the legal technology community to do the same, whether through direct contributions, research collaborations, or financial support.
Donations to the ALEA Institute are now tax-deductible under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Organizations and individuals interested in supporting ALEA’s work can learn more at aleainstitute.ai.
Legal AI is stronger when its foundational infrastructure is open, well-maintained, and governed by a mission-driven organization. The 501(c)(3) determination ensures that ALEA can fulfill that role for the long term.
